You've undoubtedly heard about CBD oil and its many purported benefits by now. But just in case you missed it, here's a quick rundown: Short for cannabidiol, CBD is a non-psychoactive chemical derived from the cannabis plant. Widely trending, it's thought to have benefits ranging from insomnia relief (just ask Jeff Lewis!) to anxiety reduction; some even say it can stave off Alzheimer's or heart disease. But do these claims have any merit? There are various opinions on this, of course — but here's what one doctor thinks: Dr. Oz, to be precise.
The doc appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on February 27. While in the clubhouse, as you can see in the video above, a caller asked him: "What is your stance on the legalization of medical marijuana, and when was the last time you toked up?" (Listen to Andy yelling "yeah!" in the background.)
Much to Andy's dismay, Dr. Oz admitted that he's never actually gotten high in his life. "You don't want to be high when you operate," he shared. Fair enough.
He continued, "That's why I feel passionately [that] medical marijuana issue is the biggest hypocrisy in America today. There are people who are making marijuana illegal to use by doctors to [heal] patients. They do not want the federal government or law enforcement, nor do they want to be in the middle of this either, most of them. I spoke to the DEA, and the FDA, they just wish someone would decide. But we have a crazy scenario now where more than half the states say medical marijuana is good to go, but it's illegal at a federal level."
He continued, "It's creating a huge crisis in CBDs ... We tested 13 different brands of CBD, 10 of them did not have what they said was going to be in there [because it's not regulated.] When you don't give any guidance, the bad boys move in. There are a couple good companies; there are a couple really bad ones."
