First up: advice on a pair of very different travel opportunities, including a road trip itinerary through Iceland, and a first escape for a couple after having a baby.
1. Iceland Road TripKelly Doherty (@runsforpizza) asks: "5 days in Iceland in June: top 2 road trip destinations?"
"Great question, Kelly—Iceland’s really blowing up as a must-see destination for Americans, most of whom are doing long weekends or extended layovers on their way to Europe. The biggest thing to remember is that you really need to get out of Reykjavik, the capital, to experience the country’s awesome natural assets, so I recommend one full day and night in the city, then road trip for the rest — so you’re definitely on the right track here.
Rather than trying to undertake something ambitious like driving all the way around the island on the Ring Road, I recommend doing a smaller ring that takes you up the west coast to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Made famous in Jules Verne’s
Journey to the Centre of the Earth as the gateway to the middle of the planet, the region gives you everything you want from your Iceland experience in one manageable bite: beautiful fjords, towering glaciers, whale watching, hiking, charming Scandinavian fishing villages like Stykkisholmur, and cute boutique inns like Hotel Egilsen."
2. First Post-Baby GetawayShari Diamond (@SnewKnew) asks: "Where should we go on our first adventure sans baby?"
"Congrats on the little one, first and foremost! So you’re probably looking for something that isn’t terribly far away from home, but you still want a noticeable change of scenery away from diapers and bottles. For East Coasters like yourself I would recommend taking advantage of the Caribbean. Now more than ever, these islands are really opening back up with tons of cheap flights and a wide selection of places to stay.
I’d start by whittling down the selection to direct flights — it’ll make you feel more at ease in case you need to jet back at a moment’s notice for any particular reason. That still leaves a nice selection of islands including the Bahamas, Jamaica, Turks & Caicos, Sint Maarten, and up-and-comers like Martinique. I’d make sure your hotel of choice has all of the amenities within arm’s reach: a great beach and good food on site. You’ve been on call 24 hours a day catering to your baby’s needs, so you’ll be happy to have an all-inclusive where everyone is catering to you."
