Shannon Storms Beador’s boyfriend, John Janssen, was in the room with her when The Real Housewives of Orange County mom sat down with Bravo’s The Daily Dish podcast.

She never could have pictured this would be her life after filing for divorce from David Beador in December 2017, after over 17 years of marriage.

Shannon got through it — she says she’s happy now and has some real advice for anyone in the middle of a messy split.

“In my dating life I made it very clear to anyone I was dating that I wasn't interested in a serious relationship. I haven't had a boyfriend since my divorce … Fun Shannon was back this season times 10,” she said.

Shannon explained that getting to that point, though, was very hard.

“Let’s be clear: I’ve had five years that were kind of tough, like can it ever turn around? Is it time? I reached a point where I realized I can stand on my own two feet, that I can be an independent person, that I can support myself, and the last little bit that I had to take care of was lose the weight. I would go and lose half of it and then go back up again and it was this constant rollercoaster and I woke up one day and said you’ve got to just make the commitment. This is ridiculous. So I did.”

She revealed she originally joined the show six seasons ago because she thought it would bring David and her closer.

“I thought my husband would watch it and spend more time with me,” she said of being on the show, adding, “On a positive note I know that I'm a strong person, I’ve been tested and I’ve been tested publicly and I’ve come through it OK. I’ve had a lot of bumps in the road but six years later I can say all is good and I'm happy.”

It's the best someone can hope for post-split (and surely resonates with anyone who's experienced something similar). We all want to know it's possible to emerge on the other side in a better place.

So, how’d Shannon get through the worst of it?

“It always depends on someone’s actual situation. For me, I’m glad that I tried to fight for my family, because I can look at myself in the mirror and know I didn't just toss it in the trash, I tried to do what I could. With the being said, when you feel as though you are at your worst, you can pick yourself up. No just means you have to work harder. Doors are shut, you can open them, you just have to find another way, you just have to work a little bit harder.”

As for her new man, she says they’ve been dating just for a couple months but she’s “never met anyone like him.

“I had a comfort with him instantly,” she said.
