You need to have a thick skin to hang with the Shahs of Sunset crew because these friends can definitely rib each other quite a bit — with love, of course. Reza Farahan, who has been with the Shahs since the beginning, knows this better than anyone, but there’s one insult he considers to be the worst of all.
“I definitely don't want to leave a restaurant and have someone say, ‘Oh, that guy from Shahs was here and he was so cheap.’ Like, that would be the worst insult for me,” Reza told The Daily Dish podcast, noting that he always makes sure to leave a generous tip when he’s at a restaurant. “I definitely always go overboard.”
His bestie, Mercedes “MJ” Javid, agreed with his stance on tipping: “I want to tip more because that person is working for a living and they're there depending on their tips, so I'm sure that the few dollars that you add up at the end of the year could add up to maybe a few thousand; you're never going to miss [those few dollars] as much as those people who will not forget that they were given a good tip.”
Their generous viewpoint has been ingrained in them as a result of their upbringing, MJ explained. “I think our parents taught us on a daily basis to be charitable to people that are in less [of a] way,” she said. “And I think that someone who's not making as much money as you, you should see that as an area to err on the side of generosity at all times.”
Reza added that this rule of tipping extra especially applies if the people he’s with have been acting rowdy: “And if someone at my table is being foul or difficult or rude to the waiter or waitress, I usually tend to try to make up for it.”
The two friends say there a lot of difficulties in getting the whole Shahs group together at a restaurant; listen to the podcast above to hear what they have to say, including which Shah MJ jokes is "cheap!" And make sure to tune in to Shahs of Sunset, every Thursday at 9/8c. Check out what's to come this season, below.
