OK, team, now that we’ve picked out the majors in the room — furniture, rugs, and lighting — it’s time to talk artwork. My main lesson to impart here is that scale is very, very important. And this is a kind of a dangerous tip, but I’m going to give it to y’all, anyway! With artwork, you want to choose a piece that’s just slightly overscale, instead of something predictably scaled. Why? Well, a predictably-scaled painting over a sofa is… fine. (Actually, I'm going to be honest, it’s not that great.) But if you increase it six or eight or 10 inches in every direction (just make sure your wall can support it!), it can really have a much larger, more dramatic impact on the room. It becomes the standout detail of the space.

My other secret is using online retailers like Art.com. You can get incredibly inexpensive pieces of photography or pieces of art — Picasso prints! Van Gogh prints! — and then frame them. It’s a really economical way to fill your walls with cool-looking prints that won’t break your bank.
