Here's some stats: "In general, men are more likely than women to cheat: 20 percent of men and 13 percent of women reported that they’ve had sex with someone other than their spouse while married," according to data from the recent General Social Survey (GSS).
However, the study adds that "among ever-married adults ages 18 to 29, women are slightly more likely than men to be guilty of infidelity (11 percent vs. 10 percent)."
But generally, when we think of cheating, we usually assume it's the man, right? Think again.
"A lot of times when a woman cheats it’s because they are not emotionally and or physically satisfied and they are unwilling to create satisfaction within their marriage. Cheating is obviously not the right thing to do no matter the circumstance, but everyone’s circumstance is different," says relationship expert and founder of upscale matchmaking agency Platinum Poire Rori Sassoon.
She says one type of woman who cheats is one totally neglected within her marriage.
"I think that there is a type of woman that is being abused in her marriage, and she seeks validation from outside her marriage to feel that she is worthy of love and affection," Sassoon says.
Another is the "bored housewife."
"I think that there is a type of woman who just gets bored and doesn’t find ways to make her own relationship exciting," Sassoon says. "When life gets stable and steady, she seeks that rush with the forbidden fruit."
Then there's the woman who's looking to social climb. The bigger, the better.
"I think that there is also a kind of woman that feels she can up her status and social climb using infidelity," Sassoon says. "At least until her reputation catches up with her."
Of course, women, like men, cheat for any number of reasons. According to that above study, a person’s "political identity, family background, and religious activity are also related to whether or not they cheat."
