Italy Is Giving Away Free Castles (Really) — Here's How You Can Get One

There is, of course, a catch.

Italy's challenged economy is creating some pretty thrilling opportunities for would-be American expats ready to go live amid the life-loving culture. Consider that time the mayor of a tiny Italian town offered to pay more than $2,000 to folks who'd relocate there — but he panicked and had to bail on the offer when 17,000 inquired about a move to the town of under 400. (Womp womp.)

Now there's a new offer that appears it may not be too good to be true after all — but actually just a great opportunity for the right kind of person.

Italy is giving away more than 100 historic buildings (103, to be quite specific) throughout the country, according to Food & Wine — and these charming buildings include not just farmhouses, inns, and monastaries but also proper castles!

In the Marche region, for instance, you could score the 13th-century Castello di Montefiore, which was built to defend the town of Recanati against attack.

(Related fun fact: In 2013, Italy held an auction to raise money to pay off its debt, in which you could actually score the castle that hosted Tom Cruise's Scientology wedding, according to The Local Italy.)

And while this new offer is legit, it does come with a serious qualification: Buildings will be granted to people on the condition that they will turn them into tourist attractions, for instance hotels, restaurants, or shopping outlets.

“The project will promote and support the development of the slow tourism sector,” Roberto Reggi from the State Property Agency explained to The Local Italy. “The goal is for private and public buildings which are no longer used to be transformed into facilities for pilgrims, hikers, tourists, and cyclists.”

Italy is specifically eyeing people under 40 with entrepreneurial spirits who want to do the work. Does all of this sound like you? If so, find more details here.

Buona fortuna!
