Study Shows Just How Many People Get Freaky on Airplanes (And It's a Lot!)

The mile-high club is not that exclusive after all.

If you travel often, for work or pleasure, those flights can start to feel pretty tedious after a while. But how far would some people go to perk up the ho-hum experience?

Well, it turns out that a lot of people would go pretty far, according to a survey via Stratos Jets. The company queried 2,000 fliers and found one in five flight passengers admitted to hooking up with a total stranger while on board a plane — and about seven percent of passengers got frisky below the belt mid-flight. Really guys? Looks like we're not so prudish as a society after all.

Interestingly too, fliers say they're most likely doing it during the dayThe bulk of naughty fun goes down in coach (about 80 percent), and surprisingly, only about 25 percent happens behind closed bathroom doors... contrary to the plot of like every plane-hookup scene in every movie ever.

These stats should perhaps come as no real surprise, says dating coach and author Laurel House, who is also star of E!'s Famously Single. “Air-travel intimacy, both emotionally and sexually, feels exciting, safe, dangerous, naughty, and sweet all at once,” says House. Planes offer the ultimate combination to lay the groundwork for intense chemistry.

This time of year might inspire even more airborne hookups, between feel-good movies and mistletoes at holiday gatherings. If you're not already with someone, this vibe could lead to a a desire to connect. “There's a lot of stress as well as relaxation around holiday travel. Both of which ignite sexual excitement depending on which energy you thrive on. Couple that with the intimacy that sitting next to a stranger for several hours creates, and having the touch-barrier broken almost immediately since you are sharing an armrest, if there's chemistry it's easy to indulge it,” says House.

Strangers often drop their guards faster on airplanes because they feel that there is a built-in emotionally safe bubble around an airplane. “Conversations get deeper, more real and honest, and more emotionally and even sexually revealing much faster than in normal life situations,” says House.

There is almost a built in no-repercussions, no-strings-attached, non-disclosure agreement.

Add that to the fact that there's the "danger" of being discovered, and the whole setup can be very sexy. “It creates the feeling of high school sneaking around, when there is an intense need for each other but you have to be careful when satisfying that need because someone could see. On an airplane, that someone can be one of the other passengers — who could be sitting right next to you — a flight attendant, or another passenger strolling the aisles. There is a lot of fantasy associated with air travel hookups. It is reminiscent of the sexy secret of other fantasy dynamics: teacher and student, boss and secretary, doctor and patient,” says House.

So, next time you have a long-haul flight, share some of your secrets, add a blanket over your laps, and let the sparks fly. We mean, if you're into that sort of thing... and we know a lot of you are!
