Are First-Class Cabins Getting Easier to Book on Miles?

If you've been following our series with Ben Schlappig, the full-time traveler and blogger behind One Mile at a Time, you know he's one lucky (also strategic, also flexible) guy who gets to live an uber-luxury travel lifestyle using the massive number of miles and points he racks up annually.

While Ben has been traveling around the world and bringing dispatches back to Jet Set, he's observed something — something you really, really want to know about. In his experience, booking first-class tickets as award seats seems to have gotten easier to do.

His approach — and a useful tip for any would-be miles users out there — is to wait until the very last possible minute to book.

This is an excellent time to book no matter what cabin you're in, but Ben discovered that it also made available some incredible first-class options — including a chance to fly alone in one of the world's best first-class cabins.

In Ben's experience, at least four first-class award seats opened up on various flights within a few days of departure — including on flights where those seats accounted for nearly the entire first-class section.

"So think about how crazy that is," Ben says (video clip above). "There’s a six-seat cabin — and four of those are award seats that are available, bookable last minute."

Crazy indeed — and a huge score for folks who can be flexible... and have the nerves required to wait it out!
